woolfy!!!
woolfy!!!

Los Angeles , circa 1999 D- Hastie & Simon “Woolfy” James meet in a run down bar in downtown LA ..a pint ? aayy a pint will do fine ..  you make music , I make music , let’s make music .. The two embarked on what’s become an eight year adventure .. Their first release on Chicago’s Guidance Recordings was Kingsburg , a track that’s appeared on many compilations , including house legend Tony Humphries at Fabric .. From there, the full length, Between Here & Now was released, which made serious waves on the electronic scene and put Projections on the map .. The lads have become well known in Los Angeles for their knock down drag ‘em out parties.. Dropping a concoction of spaced-out house , dubbed disco , funk & beard rock .. the dancefloors  last forever .. As well as Dj’ing ,  Projections keeps busy in many other projects such as the disco-rocker outfit Woolfy on Rong Records (NY) , and the supa heavy funk band Orgone on Ubiquity / Nuff Rope Records (CA/UK) .. Projections has recently released a 12” on Rong , which receives heavy rotation by DFA frontman James Murphy .A new release on the laidback Permanent Vacation label called Return Of Starlight , and a cheeky edit on the Nuff Rope label out of London .. What’s in the future ?? A hell of a lot more … like a new record deal with Sunshine Enterprises and a resulting full length Album that will be released Spring 2008.

Originally hailing from London, Woolfy started hitting the clubs in Los Angeles '91, back in the Flammable Liquid era and later Does Your Mama Know, and onto The Harvey Sessions. Started dj?ing in '95, founded the deep house & funk club Pressure, and went on to be  resident for Stereophonic at the legendary Fais Do Do. He started Projections with Dan Hastie (Breakestra / Orgone) in 2000 as well as the rude boy band Sounds From The Ward. Projections went on to be signed by Guidance recordings and released the lp „Between Here & Now” and various  singles. He's also worked with Plant Life, Orgone & Pharcyde. While in N.Y. playing at TOTH (Turntables on the Hudson), he met Dj Spun of Rong Records playing at his local. A few bottles of rum later, Rong records was releasing the Woolfy / Projections split single, a  few spliffs later and „If You Know What?s Good For Ya!!” was complete ..
Woolfy owns a pub called The Scotland Yard with his dad, retired rocker Pat Fairley of the band The Marmalade. Woolfy's Thursday night Soul Collective is renowned for having true live funk, roots and disco (the real shit) ..
His influences include dirty disco, the rare 12"s from 73 - 84 , a  bit of English punk, pub funk, and liquor.

Heineken, Van Gogh, Kraak & Smaak. The three most famous things to come out of Holland. Ever. In that order. Ok so maybe a bit of an exaggeration but the last three years have been an incredible ride for the band considered to be Holland’s hottest live act and as they release their second album things seem set to get even crazier.

Rewind a couple of years and we find three dutch guys plotting world domination from their hometown of Leiden. Since releasing their debut album Boogie Angst they have played over 200 live band gigs, they’ve been hailed by I-DJ as a “Must see live band” they’ve supported the stadium-rocking Faithless on their European tour and played some of the most prestigious gigs in the USA including Coachella Festival, SXSW Festival, the Miami Winter Music Conference as well as playing headline sell-out gigs on the West and East Coast on their last tour.

Although Kraak & Smaak originally started out as a studio project for the founder members Oscar De Jong, Mark Kneppers & Wim Plug it quickly became one of the hottest live and DJ properties in dance music. The live band has the addition of Ro Krom – drummer & vocalist, Rose – vocalist and Marc on the bass guitar. Coupled with the keyboards, FX and percussion played by the band themselves it’s a formidable slice of funk on the floor with the epic moments provided by K&S’s more leftfield output. For DJ sets band member DJ Sargon, Mark and Wim are the main spinners capable of laying down an eclectic sound that makes them as happy spinning in the tiny basement of a deep funk night as it does dropping huge riffs to festival crowds.

In the UK, the boys have rocked shows for Club nights like AIR, Fingerlickin’ and Chew The Fat and Breakspoll  For this summer they have Glastonbury, Bloom, Lovebox and Big Chill festivals lined up in the UK as well as Sziget and 10 days Off amongst others in Europe.

When it came out, their debut album Boogie Angst stood out because it sounded like nothing else around. The K&S brand of future funk led to their singles being supported by the cream of Radio 1. Annie Nightingale was the first to support the band and invited K&S to record a guestmix for her show. Annie Mac, Pete Tong and Rob Da Bank also came to the party with Rob even licensing their first single Money in the Bag for his Blue Room compilation CD. Their breaking sound led to a whole host of requests for remixes with Jamiroquai at the front of the queue as well as Mark Rae (a particular beauty of a mix that’s big with the jazz heads) Max Sedgley (who Rob da Bank asked the band to do a mix of), Richard Dorfmeister (whose Kruder&Dorfmeister Sessions album has been an inspiration to the band) and friends and family like Fort Knox Five, Soul of Man and Skeewiff. These remixes were collected onto a double album (they’d been busy) called The Remix Sessions which was released last year.

So after touring the planet in support of their debut album and remixing all their peers and heroes, the time came for the band to start recording their second album. In the early part of 07 they hit the studio for the first sessions with a second burst of recording after the summer festival season.
“The goodwill we got from our first album opened some doors for us” says mark  “We wanted to write with the people who are in the band as the core of the album but we also had met some people along the way who had got us excited and it was great that when we contacted them they wanted to work with us. We’ve got a killer track with Ben Westbeech on vocals which is lined up as the first proper single from the new album and another that we wrote with Mark Brydon from Moloko as the second. We’ve got vocal tracks with Rose and Ro in the bank and a killer track with rapper Dudley Perkins from Stones Throw who we’ve had respect for over time”.

“The new album is a bit more grown up than the first album” says Wim “We’ve worked with some of our heroes and that’s had an effect. We still want to write tracks that rock it on a dancefloor but we’ve also done an incredible cinematic track with Carmel who was a famous jazz singer in the 80’s.” “Our dream collaboration is still Thom Yorke from Radiohead though – so if anyone can hook it up we’re ready and waiting” interjects Mark.

“We’ve kept the trademark K&S sound of funk and Fender Rhodes on some of the tracks” says Oscar  “but tracks like Plastic People have a tougher edge. It’s a natural result of playing to bigger festival crowds and seeing bands like Faithless tear crowds apart with big dark riffs. We still want to keep the party funk element to our live show but you need those dark ride moments that make it happen for the big crowds. We were really pleased when Sander Kleinenberg licensed an upfront version of one of our new album tracks for his Renaissance compilation. I don’t think that would have happened with Boogie Angst”.

The band are still raving vinyl heads with Mark’s personal collection topping 50,000. He owns two vinyl record stores in Amsterdam and Leiden and is still a firm supporter of the format. Wim is also a vinyl man but studio head Oscar is more of a film buff. “ The track we wrote with Carmel would be perfect for a David Lynch film” says Oscar “and melancholic soundtracks can be a real inspiration for emotional electronic and downtempo music”.

Unlike some of their contemporaries the guys are looking forward to hitting the road with the band again. “I like the simplicity “says Oscar “ there is only one goal - get to the gig - do the gig - do the after party – move on. There’s no complications and you end up in these places you would never visit on holiday. If you go on holiday you go to a beach somewhere but the places we’ve seen we would never have seen if it wasn’t for the band. We’ve already had some massive high points like pulling into LA in our tour bus to play a sell out gig at the El Rey with our name up in the classic American style on the front of the theatre but we’re still a baby band, the best is yet to come – it will be a long time before you hear us moaning about going on tour”.

Kraak & Smaak released their second album Plastic People in April 08. The single Squeeze Me featuring Ben Westbeech was a hit across Europe and was supported by Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Zane Lowe, Annie Nightingale and Trevor Nelson on Radio 1. The band are gearing up for their second single Plastic People which will be released this summer and are currently in the studio remixing Sam Sparro’s second single.

nid & sancy
nid & sancyNID & SANCY: MODERN TIMES ARE GONE!!
dj set for eurogherkin!
campy and trashy gaylike electrofunk. but of the right kind. delightful romping and stomping beats, mixed with bleeps and beeps. add an explosive live show... and you have: NID AND SANCY

the music, the fantastic show, the clothing of the members, everything is great. we cannot think of one negative comment to make. it is jumpy and frisky, at first you just cant make out one musical line, but that doesn't matter in the least bit. the music is jumping from climax to climax, and there is no time to stand still and contemplate on the musical changes. the band members don't have time to stand still either, like adhd infected toddlers, they jump up and down.

if one really wants to find a minus point one has to look very hard. and maybe, if one is completely narrow minded, one could say that the acts sometimes jump into too unexpected directions. a climax is expected where it is not given, with a baffled audience as a result. but who cares..

the judgement: fantastic dance music of the highest quality. nice and frisky. perfect for a sunday afternoon for instance. or, actually, for any time of the day, any day of the week when you need a party!

nid & sancy: no doubt one of the most exciting european acts at this moment, are gearing up to visit austria for the first time. since the release of their album: "talk to the machine" and the 12" vinyls "no fuck all" and "sleaze boogie", nid & sancy have become one of the hottest names in clubland, their music hovering on the edge between rock and dance, with a healthy dose of attitude.

in just under 2 years, nid & sancy have established their name across the world in the club community and their lie shows have been praised all over by critics and fans alike. destined to keep people dancing nid & sancy deliver a raw, sweat infused synth fest which keeps people excited and on their dancing feet. apart from their own headline shows nid & sancy have shared stages with scissor sisters, bauhaus, vitalic, soulwax, front 242 and many many more. they have played dance clubs to rock festivals, and enjoyed bringing their unique blend of rock and roll infused electronics to audiences all over the world.

now it is time for the evil twins to step it up a notch. after the release of the bonus edition of "talk to the machine" and their successful usa live tour, and their album "colour at the darkest disco" of 2007 they now come to vienna for the first time, to do a dj set together with another legendary duo: mr. and mrs. cameron

Born in 1968 in Vienna, Christopher Just's career starts as a DJ in the Viennese “Motto” in 1982. Together with his studio partner DJ Pure he creates the Dada project “Ilsa Gold” and releases the first 12” “Up” on the label Mainframe in 1992.
Catchy samples paired with an ironic breeze is the trademark of Ilsa Gold, the tracks “Up” and “Silke” become celebrated anthems of the Rave- and Technoscene with numerous performances all over Europe following.
The release of the album “Die Zipfelmütze, der Handwagen und die Gummimuschi” in 1995 shows the “God of Techno” Sven Vath with a prick cap on the cover and provokes a middle sized scandal in Germany.
In the same time Just publishes “serious” productions on the labels Cheap, Pomelo, Labworks and Test Tube and founds the the retro-hardcore label “Petra” in 1996. With “Punk Anderson – Shave That Pussy” he heralds the 80s trash
revival and succeeds with “I'm A Disco Dancer (Gigolo / XL) in the worldwide clubscene.

With the persiflage of a frustrated electronic nerd called “Gerhard” he shines on the label “Wiener Stadtwerke” and as Roy Edel he foresees a sad and folksy future to rave-music.
In the following years Just's activities are limited to remixing, amongst others Pulp, Chicks On Speed, Stereo Total and Divine.
In 2002 he strikes back with his own productions on Cheap and Giant Wheel and with “Acid Joseph” he covers the Ecstasy Club classic “I Love The Acid”. For the ten year anniversary of Ilsa Gold he produces the double CD „Regretten? Rien!“ on Mego and re-releases his album „Jeans & Electronic“ on the Combination Records' „Forever Young“ series. „House 2“ as a sequel to „House“ appears on Cheap in November 2004 and Just decides to focus all of his attention to the production of a long play record - his
first since „Jeans & Electronic“ in 1997.

„Roland Flick Fairmont Princess #1527“ is the result, describing Just's present ideas about producing electronic music for more than one decade.
The first take of it „Popper“ is a co-production with his brother Raphael and portrays the euphoric and innocent feeling of the first Techno parties in the early
90s - a time far away from the current postelectronic reflexion.
Current Releases:
“Popper” 12” on Combination Records, April 2005
Album “Roland Flick, Fairmont Princess # 1527”, June 2005

rodney hunter

Rodney Hunter has been around the hi-fi block a few times, literally. His first 'Big Timer' was leena conquest´s 1994 mammoth track 'Boundaries' which etablished him as a world-class producer and, along with the huge success of Kruder& Dorfmeister, was the tune that put vienna on the map.

After ten years of crazyness, 71 (!!!) remixes and productions, two hiphop albums and a grammy nomination for a jazz arstist that he produced, it was in 2004 when he decided to release his first soloalbum called the hunterfiles (g-stone recordings) which is a 'sophisticatedly sweaty' album. Right now, Rodney Hunter is working on the followup of Hunterfiles which will be released soon.

Aardvarck
rush the hour!!

From the early 80s upto the present has been in the avantgarde of all major dance genres.

Over the years, Den Bosch (The Netherlands) born Aardvarck (Mike Kivits) has built up a solid reputation of uncompromising quality and versatility in the electronic scene, first in The Netherlands as a DJ and later also internationally as a producer. Starting in the mid eighties as a DJ, playing ALL forms of dance music, he went through all the genres and trends dancemusic has seen over the past 20 years and has played about every club in Holland, including residencies at clubs like the Roxy, Vriesuis, Paradiso, Club 11 and Bitterzoet.

Early nineties saw his first release as a producer, a techno record on the legendary Djax-Up-Beats label. It went quiet for a while on the recording side, until both Delsin and Rush Hour Recordings picked up on his music late nineties. The releases of some 12s on both labels led into the release of his much acclaimed Find The Cow album on Delsin in 2002, an eerie sounding electronic beats album.

Not much later, Aardvarck made the move to reside in Amsterdam. It was here where he became really prolific on the club scene, partnering with the Rednose Distrikt DJ- collective, creating artistic freedom for themselves, playing anything from jazz, soul and hip hop to broken beat, house and techno.

Being inspired by many different genres of music, he picked up one of his old loves; Techno. Once again he started producing some techno tracks, reminiscent of the early nineties Detroit sound, one of his big inspirations. He handed the first results results to Rush Hour, and the Cult Copy series was born, with Cult Copy 2 being the highlight so far, with many a big club DJ playing and charting this dancefloor monster. Now an album is cultivated. Nobody knows what the Cult Copy series will lead into or what Aarvarck will bring us next, but he sures lives on to being the legend they call the Aardvarck.

dj jürgen drimal
dj jürgen drimal Born in Eisenstadt and raised in Wulkapodersdorf, Jürgen Drimal developed his passion for music at the tender age of nine, which should coin his path of life decisively. The stepping stone for his musical evolution was the purchase of some Motown records. This was the decisive stimulus for taking keyboard lessons in the years to follow. By aid of his later next door neighbour, no other than Jazz drummer Idris Muhammad, Drimal’s love and knowledge for and about Black Music blossomed and he absorbed all shades of Funk, Soul, Jazz, R’n’B, Brasil and Latin.
His further way was the logical consequence of a passionate love affair with music. The stations he took were the following: Starting with a short tenure as a record dealer, he opened his own enterprise at the age of 19. It didn’t take long for Jürgen Drimal to make a move to Vienna, launching his record store "Cool Vibes" in the centre of Austria’s capitol.
Besides his occupation with the record market, Drimal has already been DJ-ing in various clubs since he was 16. Eventually, in 1994 he underwent his first attempts to become a producer of electronic music and this venture led to the release of "Time Zone" in 1996, a corporation with Jochen Reiter. Inspired by the amazing potential of Vienna’s DJ scene and the obvious lack of a platform for releases, Drimal developed the compilation project "Vienna Scientists" in 1998. Functioning as a forum for DJs and Producers alike, it gave Austrias Electronic New Skool the possibility to showcase its skills and styles. In the spring to follow, Jürgen Drimal founded his own label "Vienna Scientists Recordings" which by now proudly presents its 16th release "Vienna Scientists IV - Five Years Of Solid Grooves", to be launched in May this year.
Parallel to the foundation of the label, Drimal and his fellow music producer Gernot Ebenlechner teamed up in order to release their very own musical ideas. They christened their offspring by the name of "Freedom Satellite" which is about to mature to LP – length only this year.

dj rubedo

dj rubedo
(sugarfactory amsterdam)
"le big beat royale"

dj, rubedo, formerly known as dj Polak (his real name is Jacek Rajweski) is one of the most influential underground dj’s of Amsterdam. He is also the co-owner of todays hottest club of that town “nighttheather Sugarfactory” .

His music is a wild and edgy mix of "uptempo breakbeat". Electronic music, funky house and new disco. his set in motto will be a set that has been designed for motto specifically by Rubedo.

in the late 90tees Rubedo was one of the co-founders of the legendary club vegas in Amsterdam. On these clubnights he played sets of dancefloor jazz, big band, club pop, lounge and easy listening, mixed with contemporary rare independent releases. Today Rubedo is the producer of the monthly club night discocult at sugarfactory, where he is resident dj. Discocult is a steaming hot mix of local and international electronic beats. Funk, jazz, electro, disco, latin and glamrock are mixed into a steaming hot melange of new music.

from the beginning Rubedo wanted that the dj's are no longer just guys or girls who just put a record on. At discocult, contact between the dj and the crowd is very important. Because only that way the best music can be created.

discocult is a dj plattform for local and international turntable artists, who have achieved status internationally. but this is not the only reason why discocult is so special. All discocult dj's are masters of the mix. original tracks are being bashed and cut with and into exiting new songs. many dj´s who play at discocult produce their own musik and are actively involved in the music industry.
Dj Rubedo presents the best, most futuristic and boundary-less mix of 'melodic dance electronica'. It is a fascinating combination of rockin' and funky electro house, electro breaks, electro hip hop, new disco, hard edge club pop, post-punk, big beat and... a large dose of humour.

One could say that dj Rubedo has laid a milestone with the discocult clubnight. many international dj's have been his guest at discocult:

Ursula 1000 (USA), Monophonic (Producer of the Phazz-a-delic label, Germany), Morpheus (former Minimal Compact, Belgium), Pepe Braddock (Parisian DJ and producer of Atavisme), Alex Smart (a.k.a. Streamer), Mr. & Mrs. Cameron (yes, those from Arling & Cameron), BiggaBush (former rockers HiFi, UK), Dublex (Pulver Records, Stuttgart) and Malente (Germany).

Now Rubedo is back in Vienna. And he is ready to kick some.... beats!!!!
